About this site — sources and updates
How the chart, the genre split and the episode articles are made, and where the data comes from.
- Chart
- The public Apple Podcasts chart for Japan (top 100), re-fetched every day.
- Genres
- Apple’s own genreId for each show. Where a show carries several, the first one is used as its primary genre.
- Listening links
- Apple Podcasts links are canonical. Spotify and Amazon Music are search links, because show IDs are not available from their public APIs. Official site and RSS come from each show’s own feed.
- Episode articles
- The latest episode of a show is transcribed locally with Whisper and edited into an article from the first 30 minutes. These are not official summaries.
- Popular abroad
- Apple Podcasts top charts by country. The United States, the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia show the top 50 of that country’s chart. Europe combines the top 100 of eight countries (UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, Ireland), scoring 101 minus the rank in each country and adding them up. Show notes and recent episodes come from each show’s public RSS feed. The genre picks are five shows each from the US and UK genre charts.
- Episode pages
- Every episode in each show’s public RSS feed (up to 400 per show). The summary is lifted mechanically from the show’s own episode notes — it is not a summary written from listening to the audio. Boilerplate such as sponsor reads is removed by counting how often each line recurs in that feed.
- Spotify Top 30
- Source: Spotify’s own Podcast Charts (Top Podcasts, per country). We fetch 16 markets and score each show by “101 − its rank” summed across the 15 markets outside Japan. This ranking is ours, not Spotify’s — no official global chart exists. The official US, UK and Japan top 30 are listed alongside it.
- YouTube Top 30
- Public data from the YouTube Data API v3. Shows appearing on the overseas charts are matched to their official channel and ranked by subscribers. Broadcaster and network umbrella channels are excluded even when they carry the show, because they are not the show’s own channel. Show channels and host’s personal channels are labelled separately, since the latter’s subscriber count covers far more than the podcast.
- Updates
- The chart and every show’s RSS feed are checked daily and the whole site is rebuilt. When a new episode appears, its transcript and summary are produced ahead of the backlog.
- Recommendations
- Shows the editors enjoyed. It does not affect the chart. The in-feed “further down the chart” slots simply surface lower-ranked shows that have an article; no one pays to appear there.
- Removal requests
- Show information and artwork come from each show’s own public RSS feed and Apple’s public data, always with the source linked. For corrections or removal, use the Contact page and we will handle it case by case.
